No spoilers. I just want to say thanks to this sub for constantly mentioning this audiobook enough for me to give it a spin. I’m not usually a sci-fi or an audiobook person but I am BURNING through this book. The vocal performance is hilarious and so talented, and the story itself just keeps you gripped from chapter to chapter. I will say nothing more other than if you are like me, I urge you to give this book a shot!

    Peace.

    1. That Audiobook deserves all it’s praise. Ray Porter is the ultimate GOAT when it comes to narration. I would listen to that man read the phonebook.

It’s no shock or surprise that “Project Hail Mary” won Audiobook *of the Year*.

My favorite audiobook ever. Definitely want to re-listen to it at some point.

Amaze! Yeah, best audio book I’ve ever listened to, and I just finished listening to Andy Serkis narrate the LOTR trilogy (which was close second)

I got all the way through the book before I finally got the gag that had been right in front of my eyes the whole time: the Hail Mary is full of…Grace.

      Oy.

    5. We’ve been enjoying it so far too but (semi-spoiler) all the science explanation and specific details about how every little thing works gets to be a little too much sometimes and takes me out of the flow. But otherwise it has been a great listen so far

I got this audiobook during Covid shutdown without any prior knowledge or review. It is an awesome audiobook. The narrator is Ray Porter. I liked it so much I looked this up. He’s gotten awards for his audio narrations. I’ve relistened several times since.

    7. If you enjoy Project Hail Mary and Ray Porter as the voice actor, I highly suggest you check out We Are Legion (We Are Bob).

    8. The Bobiverse is 4 books with a very similar sense of humour and also narrated by ray porter. I highly suggest it.

    9. I’ve read the book and I’m listening to the audiobook now with my SO.

It’s great, but neither the story nor the narrator hold a candle to Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Definitely one of the most amazing stories I’ve ever read, and Chiwetel is such an amazing narrator. My SO was blown away as well.

One fun connection I’ve found between my back-to-back listening of these two books: Chiwetel, narrator of Piranesi, is an actor in the Martian, which was written by Andy Weir. Weird little connections like this seem to happen often with my audiobook selections!

    10. Idk I’m listening to it rn and I irrationally hate the main character and all his “wowwww look at me, I so smaaaart and funniiiii” moments lol. It’s getting on my nerves 😂

Ray Porter does such a good job that I seek out audiobooks he does. No matter what it is, he’s just so damn good.

    12. I struggle to understand all the hype. Compared to his other work this felt hastily written and poorly assembled for an undiscerning audience as a money grab to get a movie made. Also these pro Hail Mary posts feel like thinly veiled press pieces.

    13. I’m only a little bit into it and loving it. I came across it looking for other things the narrator had done after listening to the Bobiverse series. There are a *crazy* amount of characters and he manages to make them all feel separate and unique.

It’s a bit technological. But the physics aspects are such that anyone with a bit a scientific knowledge could understand.

They are without a doubt some of my favorite books. Can’t wait to finish this one!

Good audiobook, but I think the book itself is pretty overrated. I hate how it was/is marketed as hard sci-fi like the e Martian, but is almost completely fantasy Sci-Fi complete with non nonsensical government agencies, Mary sue characters with no real business being in the situation they’re in in the first place, straight up impossible in real life “science” bordering on magic, and psychic aliens. You have to suspend disbelief and keep yourself from asking any logic questions (like, why does writing a research paper qualify you to be an astronaut, why does writing a single paper make you the leading expert in a field you’re not actively doing research in, why does one individual have say over the entire fate of the planet for seemingly no reason? This is like chapter 1)

This book would not have been NEARLY as successful if it didn’t mismarket itself and ride heavily off the coattails of The Martian. It is a fantastic audio performance tho.

    15. I know this is an unpopular opinion but I found Grace in the audio book to be so fucking whiny.

    16. That narrator is GREAT. Found another book he narrates by chance, as I wasn’t specifically looking for it. He makes that book worth a listen

Yeah I think the audiobook version saved this for me. It added a dimension which would have irritated me if I just read it.

I’m not a big audiobook person, but I honestly can’t imagine this book in a text-based format. Rocky’s character would be much less engaging without the audio accompaniment of his voice. This is the perfect book if you’re looking to try out an audiobook!
