Something not so academic that it’s boring, and I’d like to find one book that covers ancient, medieval and modern India, but I’m more interested in the pre-modern times. I looked at some at some on Amazon and Goodreads, but I’d like to get recommendations from real people, not paid bots (hopefully).

It’s not exactly what you want, as it covers the Raj and independence, but if you haven’t already, you MUST read “Freedom at Midnight” by Lapierre and Collins. It’s brilliant.
