Mercer (protagonists ex-boyfriend) I loved this character. He provided the main protest against The company’s expanding and improving its futuristic technology. And there comes a point where the world becomes so horrifying to him he kills himself. In a very beautiful/sad way too. I need more books like that.

It’s a comic book series, but The Sandman by Neil Gaiman has a story arc like this at the end. This is the most beautiful example I’ve ever seen of someone voluntarily choosing the end.
[Synners](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/304806.Synners) by Pat Cadigan features a side character who, when separated from his boyfriend, is so sad he wants to die. It’s not quite as simple as actually dying, though.

I am not sure I can tell the details without spoiling the overall plot of the book but there is one very desired suicide in {{The Hallowed Hunt}}
