Hi. I need philosophically depressing books with a hero or heroine who ate very cynical in a harsh and cruel world. Thanks in advance for the suggestions!
– Negative Space by BR Yeager
– Notice by Heather Lewis
– Earthlings by Sayaka Murata
– Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh
– The Room by Hubert Selby Jr
– The Sluts by Dennis Cooper
– Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby Jr
Hatherence on
The novella The Girl Who Was Plugged In by James Tiptree Jr. It’s available in a few different collections but I don’t think it was ever published stand-alone. [Example](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/216333). It’s fairly short, but manages to say a lot with few words.

The [Bel Dame Apocrypha series](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/9359818), starring a thirtysomething bounty hunter woman. Very cynical, but not the most philosophical.
The Gunslinger by Stephen King
