“The Saints” series released by the mainstream branch of LDS would strike your fancy- they discuss the old church history and the “brief” period of polygamy before the church banned it. It he FLDS sect splintered in part due to the church banning polygamy. Also, there is some craziness that will have you shaking your head far beyond polygamy such as magical stones called the urim and thummin that Joseph smith claims was used to translate plates of gold, a magic hat, people magically growing body parts after injury and being visited by angels…. Here are several volumes, the first one is the only one I read before leaving the church. You can buy them for $5 through Deseret books (no, missionaries won’t show up if you order from the church book store) or may find them at the library. They also have free e books and audio book through the LDS church app. Further, while written by the church as a “historical accounting” it 100% reads as an easy novel and while I’m 100% the strange crap is fiction, it here is a lot of fun history in the books that actually can be proven. So, I’m summary, while non-fiction by definition, it’s fiction.

The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams. It’s YA. I don’t think the book uses the word “Mormon” but that’s obviously what it’s about.

Saints by Orson Scott Card (he sucks but it’s a compelling book, though historical not contemporary)

The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall is exactly what you are asking for.
