Looking for a Christmas gift for my nephew who is a good reader but prefers graphic novels. I’d like to get him a graphic novel based off a “real” book but I don’t know how to evaluate graphic novels (or reading level appropriateness—my son is only 2).
He has read and loved the graphic novel versions of Percy Jackson, so that’s the level he is currently. I know there are graphic novel versions of the Magic Treehouse books, the I Survived books, etc. but I don’t know how good they are or if they might be a little childish for him?
Additionally I know some of my favorite books from when I was that age are now graphic novels—The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce—but are they going to be appealing for a boy? They lean pretty heavily on the experience of being a girl in a man’s world.
Suggestions? Should I just get him a regular novel since I understand those better (probably a Diana Wynne Jones like Charmed Life or Christopher Chant)?

Getting a regular novel for someone who is more into graphic novels is a tough call. I would try to avoid it as the graphic novels section for young readers has grown a lot over the years, and now has plenty to offer. The Wings Of Fire series may be a good direction to look here, as it is one of the hottest fantasy series in that reading level. I’m not terribly familiar with the percy jackson graphic novels, but i would guess that Wings of Fire is of a similar reading level.
