Fantasy books that cause severe character-driven emotional damage?

If a book doesn’t make you cry, is it even worth reading?

I’m obsessed with the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. The lesbian space necromancers series that will make you fall in love and absolutely break you. I’ve read all three books now maybe 6 times, and I’m honestly tempted to read them over again because I truly feel that nothing else can compare. It’s such a tragedy, to be so perfectly ruined by an author that all other books now feel lacking.

Please prove me wrong. Please show me new ways to suffer beautifully.

Science fiction is okay, though generally I prefer fantasy. Huge bonus points for LGBT themes and characters. Smut is fine, but I’m honestly bored of all the straight sex.
