Hard sci-fi that is not set in space or futuristic
Something like “Jurassic Park” or “Dark Matter” that could conceivably happen in our time, with somewhat realistic (maybe not yet plausible) scientific explanations…
The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson
We Are Satellites by Sarah Pinsker
The Blue Ant trilogy by William Gibson
Termination Shock by Neil Stephenson
Red Team Blues by Cory Doctorow

Have you read sphere by chrichton?
Seveneves is hard sci-fi set in modern time but a lot of it takes place in a space station near earth.
The Three Body Problem.

[The Rifters series by Peter Watts](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/66479.Starfish), also available as free ebooks on his website. The author is a marine biologist, and I have a degree in molecular biology and was extremely impressed by the depiction of molecular biology in these books.
I see someone else has already suggested Seveneves, but you may be interested in Reamde by Neal Stephenson. It entirely takes place on Earth.
