I just finished reading Phyllis Ann Karr’s At Amberleaf Fair and the worldbuilding and word choices reminded me of Pamela Dean’s The Dubious Hills in the way people get classified, and the community works together.

I’m not sure exactly how to articulate it, but I would love to read more fantasy that do something different with how the community works, how people relate to each other in terms of social roles or skillsets, and use more inventive linguistic quirks.

I say fantasy but I wouldn’t mind SF recs, and older titles are very welcome. TIA!
