At the tail end of this book the main character mentions no longer speaking to Brand in the jail cell they are being held in. Then, further toward the end of the book it says: “I never really told you why Brand and I stopped talking…………… I made up a friend and talked to them in a world I made out of nothing but words.”

and I am SO CONFUSED. Brand is literally the catalyst for the entire plot of the book. If Brand isn’t real, then the dog never got kidnapped, then Griz would never leave his home island and ultimately would have no reason to find the colony where his non-dead sister is.

Can anyone who has read this book weigh in on this? What am I missing here????
