I know you asked for a book, but The Lives of Others movie was highly acclaimed and I liked it very much.

[Night Soldiers](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/627614.Night_Soldiers) follows a character who is recruited into the NKVD (the KGB’s predecessor) during WWII. The book is more about the individual agent than the agency, though.
If you’re alright with some narrative nonfiction, [The Spy and the Traitor](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37542581-the-spy-and-the-traitor) is really good. It’s about a fairly high-ranking KGB officer who was secretly working as a double agent. You get some perspectives on how the agencies on both sides were working.
