My fellow bibliophiles, greetings! I’m looking for suggestions of books whose main character(s) are people who have, on the surface, very mundane lives and who may be regarded by society as odd, but who actually have very rich inner lives, or a unique talent, or find satisfaction in simple things.

    Some examples I’ve enjoyed:

Convenience Store Woman – Sayaka Murata

Leonard and Hungry Paul – Ronan Hession

    Plainsong – Kent Haruf

What You Are Looking For Is in the Library – Michiko Aoyama

Some examples I did not enjoy:

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman

There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job – Kikuko Tsumura

A Tidy Ending – Joanna Cannon

I think the difference between enjoyable and not enjoyable is the character’s satisfaction with their life. The first group are generally happy with themselves and the second group are not. I’m open to all genres except horror and romance and looking forward to anything you think might fit. Thanks in advance!
