I recently moved to North America (Toronto) and I’ve been looking for places/events to meet like-minded people with whom I can discuss or read books.

I know there are a lot of meetup groups, but they don’t usually meet frequently (mostly meet only once a month) and they usually don’t go beyond discussing the book of the month, i.e. there’s not much socializing element (as far as I know). Many are online which doesn’t really offer much in terms of socializing.

I used to know a lot of clubs or groups that would meet weekly to discuss books but also to hang around and chat and I had made a lot of good friends in those groups.

Do you guys know any places/groups/events like this? I’d really appreciate any suggestions. Cheers.

    1. Honestly, I find other horror fans by wearing t-shirts with HP Lovecraft references on them. It’s been a surprisingly effective way to make friends. The more tentacles on the shirt, the more people want to talk to you about it- then it’s just a matter of asking about their favorite books and stories.

I also bend my reading around other people, if my friend likes a book I’ll read it so that I can talk to them about it.

      Hello fellow Torontonian.

TPL has a variety of in person book clubs in a lot of their branches. Apart from book clubs, The Reference Library holds various talks with authors regularly too. Then there is Word on the Streets festival @ Queen’s Park in June every year. Lots of used book stores to browse, too.
