I have the same problem. When reading something I really want to retain, I end up reading it twice. The first time, I make marks in the margins for points I want to review, then I go back through, read it again, and take notes as I go. I find writing notes is like having a conversation with myself about the material, and it helps me remember it. I do notes in the margins for brief observations, and a notebook where I write longer notes, definitions, info from other sources, etc.
I use usefulcharts and religionforbreakfast when I want a general overview of something (YouTubers). Books are pretty bland on those topics, I’d find it easier to audiobook that kind of stuff.
