I’ve been thinking of buying this author’s book, but can’t seem to decide. I searched their best/popular books, War and Peace, and Anna Karenina. I think I should buy either one of these? What do you suggest?
Death of Ivan Ilic. It’s a short book and it’s a masterpiece. Best way to get familiar with Tolstoj.
Anna Karenina is his best book and it’s the best novel I’ve ever read in my life. It’s a surprisingly fast read.
Personally I love War and Peace but it’s a book that requires you a lot more time to read than Anna Karenina. Not everyone is going to like the War part, if you’re one of those people it’s going to drag a bit. It’s one of my favourite book ever, I love the characters.

Do you have access to a library? You might want to do a trial run before committing to the huge books you mentioned.

I would say Anna Karenina is the better book

War and Peace is the best book I’ve ever read. It has everything: action, adventure, politics, love, family. Each part written masterfully, and making a coherent whole. Don’t be daunted by the size. You can take your time.

Read all he’s written. Warm up by reading a short story collection that includes The Death of Ivan Ilyich and The Kruetzer Sonata

I liked his “what is art?”

I may be the only person who started with *Resurrection* but I highly, highly recommend it. I’ve yet to read Anna Karenina or War & Peace, but they’re more highly acclaimed, and if they’re better than Resurrection I’ll be really impressed.

I’ve only read Anna Karenina, so I can’t speak for the other books. However, I believe Tolstoy himself thought it was better.
