I’m looking for books that portray a small story within history but that give historical context for it. I’m not a fan of huge historical volumes but love the small stories within the narrative.

    1. “Say Nothing” by Patrick Radden Keefe is a chilling investigation into a specific murder, situated in the broader context of the Troubles.

EDIT- my one complaint is that Keefe didn’t mention the little factoid that Stephen Rea eventually starred in V for Vendetta, a movie where he >!brings down a tyrannical British government by bombing the Old Bailey.!<

      you may like:

      – in the spirit of crazy horse by peter matthiessen. tbh I think any telling of that story is bound to be pretty subjective so I’m not sure how well it stands up. it’s the detailed story of the American Indian Movement in general, and of Leonard Pelletier in particular.

      – the executioners song by Norman Mailer. I’ve never felt the least bit drawn to Mailer’s fiction (still don’t), but this covers the true story of Gary Gilmore, who actively campaigned to force the state of Utah to execute him, in the 70’s. it’s not only about Gilmore. it gets the perspective and shows the impact on a huge range of players.
