How do y’all feel about his books? I’ve never read an author that was so inconsistent. I started with Dark Matter which I thought was an exciting plot but not very well written. Then I read Run which I loved and finished in one sitting because I was so into the story. Then I read Abandon and gave up halfway through because the writing was so bad I was cringing. I don’t know what to make of him.

    1. I like reading any sci-fi almost. To me it’s like the equivalent of a sci-fi beach read. It’s fun, it’s not very deep, you can read through it quickly.

I read his short story that was in a collection on Amazon. I forget it’s name currently. Was feeling pretty meh about it but he did pique my interest. Saw Dark Matter on here somewhat frequently and resolved to wait for it to go on sale on the kindle store.

Recursion went on sale so I got and read that. Meh. Parts were interesting but other parts were pretty cringey to me. Still liked the idea though.

Then Upgrade went on sale so I got it and read that. Meh. Maybe less meh for me than Recursion? I liked the idea a lot and certain aspects but eh. Was kinda all set on Crouch.

Then Dark Matter went on sale so I got it and read it. Really liked the idea of it. Probably the least meh for me but still there feels like something was lacking for me. I think I’m all set on Crouch for the time being.

Then Wayward Pines will go on sale so I’ll get it and read it.

I think there’s a bit about his writing I don’t like. Character motivations never really come across clearly to me and I don’t think he writes great female characters. That’s in my opinion and I’m not literarily educated enough to say whether that holds much water. Others, I have heard describe him as airport sci-fi which I thought was amusing. Still, there’s something about his work that makes me continue to read him. I haven’t really regret my lost time from reading him and I like the pacing of his books. So I’ll go on reading everything I can get my hands on by him

    3. I thought Recursion was really good. Dark Matter was okay, but the paradoxical story got in the way, and the characters weren’t great.

His books kinda read like B grade sci-fi/action films. Interesting ideas at times but average execution.

I like his stand alones so far! I’ve read both Recursion and Dark Matter – they’re basically for people who like both sci-fi and romance. I do have Upgrade sitting on my shelf since it came out (I actually preordered and just haven’t gotten around to). They’re pretty easy reads/somewhat light and fluffy sci-fi which is right up my alley.

Recursion was decent as was the first wayward book.

Snowbound was hot garbage. One of my few 1-star reads

    6. I have read Dark Matter, Recursion and Upgrade. I like the plot idea of Dark Matter. It had a more interesting idea towards the end of the book which I felt could have been given more scope on the book. Also Recursion idea was great and I loved the it. Upgrade did not live up to my expectation. It was more like a typical action movie plot. I would read his next novel to decide if I would still keep in my to read list.

I think he accidentally achieves success. I read Recursion and really liked it. Felt like all the concepts made sense and factored into the story really well. The characters were on the weak side but still entertaining.

Then I read Dark Matter and I was almost insulted by how bad it was. The concepts didn’t make any sense and actively contradicted each other, and his writing of his female characters (and male characters in regard to how they treat the female characters) was legitimately gross.

I figured an author who can hit fairly solidly in one attempt and miss completely on another isn’t someone I should put effort into reading, so I’ve only read those two books and it’s probably gonna stay that way.

I really like all his newest sci-fi thrillers because they’re fast paced and packed with action. I do think they’re too male-centric, though.
