So far I’ve only read books that are commonly popular or novels by living authors and always avoided reading classic works by highly recognized writers. The only classics I’ve read were some German ones I had to fight through in school like:
\- Maria Stuart by Friedrich Schiller
\- The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
\- The Physicists by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
\- Beneath the Wheels by Hermann Hesse
\- The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
However, none of them were really intriguing and I wanted to expand my horizon in classic literature. Can you recommend me some works to start with outside from German literature?

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons

They’re all pretty easy to get through and good places to start with the classics.
