My wife recently started a paraprofessional job and said “I wish I could understand more on how autism works actually in the brain”. So, here I am! Nothing too complicated please just a good introduction and basic overview of autism.

I haven’t read it yet but I hear Unmasking Autism is an educational read.
This seems like an easy question, but it is a really complicated question. Some autistic people want to be called autistic. Some people with autism wanted to be called a person with autism. Some people with autism think almost exclusively in pictures. Some people with autism think almost exclusively in words. Some do not communicate verbally and others have hyperlexia and on and on and on.
Thinking in Pictures by Dr. Temple Grandin is fantastic. I’ve heard great things about Born on a Blue Day. Both of those books are written by people who are #actuallyautistic. That hashtag is also a fascinating place for neurotypicals to learn more about the autistic experience.
