My 8yr old son and I just finished the Harry Potter series and he really enjoyed them. It was my second read on the series and I enjoyed it as well. While he is able to read on his own at this point, I really had a good time reading the series with him and it gave us something to look forward to each night.
I’m looking for a suggestion on another single book or series that would be entertaining for us. It doesn’t need to be magic or fantasy related, he likes all sorts of books on his own but I do feel like the action and exhilaration was what really kept him wanting to read more. I could definitely tell that during the slower more informative chapters he was less interested.
Thanks in advance.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
I’m a bit old fashioned, so I have to throw in Beatrix Potter. _The Tailor of Gloucester_ was one of my favorites as a child. But there are at least a couple dozen of those little green books.
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander is worth a look, but it might be a little rough for an 8 year old.
I loved loved *loved* a series of books illustrated by Friso Henstra and mostly written by Jay Thompson. _The Practical Princess_, _Stupid Marco_, _The Silver Whistle_, _The Round Sultan and the Straight Answer_, etc.
The Oz books by L. Frank Baum are old enough to be very problematic at times, and if you’ve ever heard of 80s kids being traumatized by the movie _Return to Oz_, realize that many of the scariest elements of that movie were taken directly from Book #3, _Ozma of Oz_. That said, I loved Book #5, _The Road to Oz_, where Dorothy goes wandering down a road with a hobo, a not-too-bright lost little boy, and the Rainbow’s Daughter.
The Menagerie series by Tui T Sutherland. They are absolutely wonderful books.
The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, Mrs Frisbee and the Rats of NIMH, By the Great Horn Spoon
The Percy Jackson series
