I'm a writer working on a medieval fiction novel, but I really need inspiration as well as motivation to work on it. I've always had in interest in medieval settings but often find it difficult to find related books that I like. Because I'm a writer, I'm really picky.
I'm looking for something gritty and mature and not with a whole lot of fantasy elements.

The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell
If you’re looking for something a bit different but still full of romance and adventure, you might want to check out the *Mer Chronicles* trilogy (*Updrift, Breakwater & Outrush*). It’s got a unique mix of sirens and humans, and while it’s not medieval, the world-building and relationships could give you some fresh inspiration for character dynamics or conflict in your own work. Plus, the way it handles the blend of adventure and romance might spark some ideas for your story!
