I am looking for either a book series or stand alone novel set in a apocalyptic world, most likely due to a disease or mutation considering what I'm looking for, that revolves around a person (male or female, idc) that was technically infected/changed but they retained their humanity/consciousness but maybe now have weird cravings, powers, and/or psychical appearance changes. I also don't mind if the series isn't based in a apocalyptic world, it could also be based in a alien or alternate world, I just like the chaos and intensity an apocalyptic world brings to a story. Especially with what I am looking for. I read the story A Different Virus: Heartfire (highly recommend btw) and since then all I can think about is reading something else like it but my messy google searches aren't bringing forth what I'm looking for so I'm hoping the people of Reddit can help me.
Overall I'm hoping for a story with a crazy intense world and the main character has some power or thing about them that they typically have to hide from most to survive and keep from being killed, persecuted, and/or experimented on by others. Any recommendations provided is greatly appreciated!
