Hi everyone. I wanted to ask if anyone could suggest a book that my wife might like. She's having a rough time at work and our second kid is on the way, so I wanted to get her something that could help her escape a little bit but would also be compelling.

She really likes contemporary authors like Amy Tan and Chimadana Ngozi Adichie, and the last book she really raved about was Adiche's "Half of a Yellow Sun." Can anyone suggest something similar?

    1. My recency bias wants to suggest “Shelterwood” by Lisa Wingate. It’s two alternating stories that come together beautifully. One early 1900’s and the other 1990? The story about the children was especially great, especially with the masterful audiobook narration.

Since she likes Amy Tan, she might also like Lisa See. My favorites of hers are The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane and Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, but they’re all excellent.

Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The Bride Price by Buchi Emecheta

Both books are very compelling stories about women. And the love subplots are quite sweet

      Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

      Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini

    5. Purple Hibiscus by the same author as Half of a Yellow Sun.
But, to go with something smoother she can try THE BOOK THIEF.

My favorite books to give as gifts are currently:

The Book of Delights and the Book of (more) Delights by Ross Gay. Hard cover preferably because they look so nice on a book shelf.

Claire Keegan’s collection. Foster, Small Things Like These, and So Late in the Day. Hardcover, naturally. They are beautiful lil books.

And I think a book for the baby to be will melt Mama’s heart. My favorite books to give babies are In Every Life by Marla Frazee, The Story of Rap, and Change Sings by Amanda Gorman.

Edited to Add: if your wife loves Tan and Adiche and books are the way to her heart AND you have $400 to drop on a gift, [Toni Morrison Portrait Book Set](https://juniperbooks.com/products/toni-morrison-portrait-set?srsltid=AfmBOopUv2fr8Crkj8TmngXaPet1VI9UBfWF_NhQQ4gGapASjt2tJ_NG) may be just the thing. Probably a long shot but if you’re gonna be a bear might as well be a grizzly.
