Hoping to find a book that feels like it's one of Tarantino's movies

Looking for a book(or author) with a sense of macabre, mystery, intensity, unpredictability, interesting characters, dark humor, preferably a past or far future setting to take my mind off my real life.
I've been really enjoying his films lately. The sense of impending doom, questionable morality/justice, humor and violence combined with the way the plots develope unexpectedly has been my escape. I need more of it.

Male main character would be a plus.
I generally enjoy older books & writing styles.
I love sci-fi, horror, western, mystery.
I dislike romance, relationships/marriage, parent/child and overly upbeat tones.

Throw any ideas you've got at me.

Try *The Switch* by Elmore Leonard. It’s a prequel to *Rum Punch* which Tarantino filmed as *Jackie Brown*. A few of the same characters are in it. It’s very 1970s.

Tarantino wrote a graphic-novel sequel to *Django Unchained* called *Django/Zorro* which is very good. Definitely worth looking into. There’s also a graphic-novel release of *Django Unchained* that differs, sometimes quite a bit, from the film.

*Natural Born Killers*, *Pulp Fiction* and *Reservoir Dogs* are all available in script form. The first of these is very different to the final filmed version.

Tarantino himself has written a novel of *Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood*, with extra character insights and differences to the film. *Cinema Speculation* is his deep analysis of a number of movies, but still strangely fascinating. Worth a look.

Failing all this? *Trainspotting* by Irvine Welsh has a very dark, grungey feel to it. *The Big Sleep* by Raymond Chandler is an older book with a very cutting-edge writing style for the time it was published, but with the depth, darkness and sense of doom Tarantino gives you. You could definitely try *Less Than Zero* by Bret Easton Ellis – Tarantino wanted to film it at one point – or *Rules of Attraction*, *American Psycho* and *Lunar Park*, all of which feature something akin to Tarantino’s work. Finally? *Casino Royale* is another one Tarantino wanted to adapt. It’s the first James Bond novel. It’s obviously dated to some extent, but you’ll see what attracted him to it.

      Happy reading!
