I am looking for suggestions for my younger sister for Christmas. She wants to find more fantasy books (fairies, elves, etc). I love reading so I’m really excited to find some of these books for her, but most of the ones I remember reading are a bit old for her. She’s 11 years old in early middle school. Her mother is a bit strict so it needs to be clean, free from profanity or sexual content. Some violence is ok. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

    1. The False Prince, Jennifer Nielsen (the whole series is great)

      Sweep, Jonathan Auxier

The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic, Jennifer Trafton

The School for Good and Evil – totally clean and perfect for that age! It’s a really fun fantasy adventure!

Spiderwick Chronicles – if she loves fairies and elves, these are essential reading for her age! Includes a ton of fairy lore and different mythical creatures. Totally clean as well

The Princess Academy – not exactly fairies and elves, but very fairytale inspired. Totally clean and with a cool message about the importance of education and girls saving themselves. Plus there is a whole series if she likes them!

The Girl Who Could Fly – more sci-fi than fantasy, but great for an 11 year old. About a girl who can fly (shocker) who goes to a special school for children with abilities- but realizes something is off. Totally clean (with some fun “well butter my butt and call me a biscuit” type expressions instead of anything close to swearing)

Heir Apparent – a girl becomes trapped in a fantasy/medieval video game and has to win to escape. She does “die” a couple times, but it’s not graphic because she’s just playing a game. It’s been a while since I read it, but I believe it’s totally clean since I got it from my 5th grade class library.

    3. Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. A re-telling of the Arthur legend through the eyes of the women in the story. Not sure about the language or how “clean” it is since it has been a long time since I read it.

Kiki’s Delivery Service – Eiko Kadono

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis

The Tea Dragon Society (graphic novel) – Kay O’Neill

      Aquamarine – Alice Hoffman

      The Borrowers – Mary Norton

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
It’s the first book in a series and it was my absolute favorite at the same age.

The lion the witch and the wardrobe series.

The wizard of Oz series. I loved these as a kid.

Both of these might be a tiny bit young for her but I can’t really remember. There’s another book on the tip of my tongue and I’ll come back if I remember it.

ETA: the wrinkle in time series. The next few books have Biblical references (like there’s one where the characters meet Noah right before the flood). I don’t think the series aged well as an adult but a kid would still like them. There’s unicorns.
