So I’m looking for the type of book that is investigating common attributes found in “girly girls” and why they may be looked down upon. Like about horse girls, liking pink/sparkles/lisa frank type stuff. Nonfiction is preferred as I’m attacking from a research angle but if the fiction aligns closely enough I’ll read that too.

Basically when I was a little girl, I tried very hard to be a Tom girl and refused to be associated with more girly girl type stuff like pink, doing my nails and hair, etc. and I just wanted to read some research or points of view as to why I had this mentality and society supporting it – I’m doing an art project using this stereotypical girly things and I wanted some literature to support my art. Thank you in advance!

I don’t have any books recs so I’m sorry if my comment is a waste of time, but as a guy with a very “girly girl” mom, I wanted to offer my perspective as someone who isn’t girly but was taught to appreciate it.

I really think the best way you’re going to learn is by asking around, that’s probably the best way to get all your questions answered. As an artist, I also think that would put a more personal touch to your art. When you talk about it you can reference stories you heard straight from the source.

If this was just not helpful at all then my bad, but I did also wanna say that you should be proud of your personal growth with this. Getting over learned hate is hard, and you’re clearly working hard to learn better. Props to you for that amiga!
