I can’t believe I’m saying this: but, my favourite local bookstore recently underwent renovations, and it’s so busy and crowded now that they’re finished I feel like I can’t actually sit and comb through their fiction sections. So, when in doubt – Reddit.

Looking for mainly modern books, but am not averse to a good classic.

Modern books that I’ve loved previously are:

    • Honorée Fannone Jeffers’ “The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois” (read it nearly two years ago and I still think about it. I’ve never reread a book before, but this one I may.)
    • Yaa Gyasi’s “Homecoming” and “Transcendent Kingdom”
    • Brit Bennett’s “The Vanishing Half” and “The Mothers”
    • Candice Carty-Williams’ “People Person” (wasn’t my favourite writing style, and 100% not what I was expecting the book to be about, but I loved the characters in this book)

And the two classic books that I consistently think about are:

    • Nella Larsen’s “Passing”
    • Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”

Would prefer to avoid romance, however, a good book is a good book and if there’s a love story at the centre of it – fine by me. Really just looking for good realistic fiction stories.

    Thanks so much! :—)
