The quickest way I could describe this ask was heel turn. To quickly explain what it is for those of you who don't know. It's from professional wrestling and it's when your hero that everyone has loved and cheered for switches and becomes a bad guy. I want a book with a main character who is widely viewed as a hero, who gone through a lot of hard times finally reaches a breaking point and becomes a villian. And they stay a villian for a decent chunk of time, even if that's not who they stay as forever.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie and
Fearscape by Ryan O’Sullivan and Andrea Mutti both immediately come to mind.
Love seeing “heel turn” used outside of the usual wrestling context 😅
