I have been trying to get into reading after a very long time. So far I have read 2 books and did not enjoy them, instead feeling frustrated at the ending and also not really happy with tropey moments and dialogues. The books I have read so far are Mad Honey (wasn't happy with the ending and lots of tiring mentions of bees that contributed nothing to the story), Book of Koli (literally nothing happens in the book and none of the characters were likeable).

For reference I read books when I was 15 and now I am 32. Books I liked were all of the harry potter series (loved the world building and the characters), To Kill a Mockingbird (even though depressing i thought it was well written) and i can't recall the rest, but i just remembered being obsessed with Harry Potter. But not sure if I will like those kind of books now?

Right now I am reading where the crawdads sing and when they switch to the chapter of the murder i immediately started to lose interest. It's hard to say what genre i like, i just want a good non predictable story with good character developments. I like giving lessons in chemistry a go and the 'every guy is an asshole and dumb hence the main protagonist is a strong woman) put me off right away, (also I am a woman myself)

Here are a few books that helped me when I got back into reading or I just found very pleasing and fun to read…

      * Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
      * The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
      * Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery
      * A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

I hope these might be of help 🙂

Maybe try a few different genres instead? What kind of tone or vibe do you like, do you want light and happy endings or do you like darker, more thriller kind of stuff? Or maybe you like world building, like in Harry Potter, and might be drawn to fantasy?

How about the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett? He makes gentle fun of the conventions of fantasy fiction while also telling original and great stories. He’s a great writer.
