My white boyfriend loves horror sci-fi, especially set in space, and I’d love to introduce him to some authors outside his usual. Bonus points if the author is from the Caribbean as that is where I am from, but I appreciate that may be more challenging to find. I can’t recommend anything to him as I am the opposite and won’t go near horror with a ten foot pole XD. I even thought the batman movies were too scary. So please bear that in mind when describing your recommendations and be gentle. Thank you for your help!

    1. There’s a ton of women Latin American authors doing great speculative fiction with horror elements and eeriness.

From those that have been translated, I’d recommend:
Ana Paula Maia, Mariana Enríquez, Samantha Schweblin, Mónica Ojeda, Liliana Colanzi or Lina Meruane

    2. *The Lesson* by Cadwell Turnbull is a story about what happens when aliens make first contact in the Caribbean. An interesting setting and unique characters that follow what happens once these beings have integrated into society.

*Battle Royale* is a controversial political book that arguably inspired *Hunger Games* and *Squid Games*

*Rosewater* is an excellent Nigerian sci-fi series that features a young man who has been given powers of insight by a strange alien presence in the city. He works as a “finder” for the government and encounters conspiracy while also trying to figure out what exactly this alien *is.*

*Ring Shout* by P. Djèlí Clark is about three female demon slayers. A fun and fast ride. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer vs the KKK. Won the Hugo for Best Novella of 2020.

*Night Watch* is a cool Russian series about a police force tasked with taking on supernatural evil. Entertaining and unique for it’s time.

*No Gods, No Monsters* by Cadwell Turnbull is bizarre and unique, about the paths crossed in stranger’s lives when “monsters” are shown to be a reality. Manages to skillfully blend creepy moments with allegorical political commentary, and features very well written characters.

*Monstrilio* by Gerardo Samano Cordova is an absolutely charming and strange work of weird fiction. Starts with the story of a young woman whose son has died. She removes his lung and keeps a piece. The story follows the unusual story of what happens next and then changes perspective to her best friend, her husband, and then…. The lung.

Victor LaValle writes some really creepy body horror. Check out The Machine, or his novella The Ballad of Black Tom.
