I have been reading the American Short Story Masterpieces anthology, which is excellent. Yesterday I read Gail Godwin's story "Dream Children," a remarkable story with moments that made me gasp in awe of her sentences. Godwin is known as a novelist, though, not a short story writer, and since reading "Dream Children" made me want to read more of her work, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for her novels. Godwin was very big at the time the book was published in 1982–she's the first author mentioned on the cover. She was nominated for the National Book Award three times but never won, for The Odd Woman, Violet Clay, and A Mother and Two Daughters, so maybe I should start with one of these?
If there are any Gail Godwin fans here, what would be the best Godwin novel to start with? What are her best books?

I’ve only read one of her books, “Father Melancholy’s Daughter,” it was slow paced but not boring, beautifully written. It does have religious references because the father is a priest, but it isn’t preachy.
