Would like to read a story about a character (preferably a minor) experiencing paralyzing shame, their fear of outward expression and appearance of outward coldness/hostility due to said shame.
Please no Atonement. Not what I'm looking for. I'd like being driven by to shame to be the centralized focused very early on and throughout and to serve as the theme of the book.

The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley is about shame on a few different levels – sexuality and the body (narrated by a boy approaching puberty), but also masculinity, wealth, social class
Boy A by Jonathan trigell. A separate peace by John Knowles.
Honestly Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld is a very shame-driven book about adolescence
