I’m looking for some books in which a male character had to endure whipping or other types of physical torture. Think Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, Roots by Alex Haley, Forged in the Jungles of Burma by D. C. Shaftoe, or Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. Any suggestions?

I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking for but Unbroken by Louie Zamperini is pretty good. Dude was a POW in Japan, endured all kinds of crazy torture and years later competed in the Olympics
