Preferably fantasy and preferably with romance, in terms of genre.
I’m thinking of books that felt like it hit all of the tropes and clichés at first but then completely changed and turned into something else.
I love when I read stories and I’m thinking it’s going in one direction, but then it goes in a completely different direction, like with a plot twist or just character motivations weren’t what you expected.

Sunshine by Robin McKinley.
The Queen of the Tearling trilogy by Erika Johansen was totally this for me. It started off feeling very much like a pretty typical YA fantasy book, average girl is actually royalty, etc etc. But as the book/series progresses it gets *dark* and weird and trippy in some really fun ways. Definitely pulls the rug out from under you.
Olivia Atwater’s Regency Faerie Tales have some subverting of themes.
*So This is Ever After* by FT Lukens – what happens after the battle is won and the kingdom saved?
Maybe *The Darkest Part of the Forest* by Holly Black?
*The Emperor and the Endless Palace* by Justinian Huang combines three different time periods and is trippy. It’s also the spiciest one on this list.
It’s YA but the carry on trilogy by rainbow Rowell.
The Housemaid- very twisty and turny!
