I'm sorry if this is a little bit off-topic, I just don't know who else to ask.

So, I am currently on a politics/history binge. I have recently read some older work that was written in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

I often feel a lot dumber after reading them, as they're written in a much different way than today. They seem to be written at a far higher reading level than even the most sophisticated modern books.

Digesting and understanding this information is extremely challenging in print, and nearly impossible on audiobook format (my preferred choice). Some of them were initially written in different languages and then translated into English, which may be playing a role.

If I push myself to read more and more of this type of work, is it going to improve my reading comprehension of it?
