I teach eighth grade English and have many reluctant readers in my class. One of my goals for the year is to help my students find reading material that is interesting for them.

I have a large number of kids who won’t read anything but graphic novels. (Dog Man and Raina Telgemeier are the most popular.) Graphic novels are great, of course, but I do want to help some of them try something a little more challenging, possibly help them work up to a book without pictures.

Right now, we are reading the Gris Grimly adaptation of Frankenstein and most of them love it. It’s prose-heavy, but has a lot of beautiful illustrations.

Does anyone have any recommendations for prose heavy or challenging graphic novels I can add to my class library?
