I have a very easy time finding captivating literary fiction that is dark or melancholic, but I've realized recently I struggle a fair bit finding more generally uplifting works. It got me wondering what I can do to change my reading habits a bit, As much as I love my strange grim novels I feel like I must try to keep a varied diet, it can all get a bit intense after a while.
Are there any literary fiction works with a generally happier/brighter tone that retain the excellent prose and are thought-provoking? Obviously literary fiction is multifaceted by definition, often tackling difficult and uncomfortable topics and feelings, never uniformly positive or negative, serious or silly. I know, please don't try to argue over definitions, I hope my question is still understandable. Could George Saunders be a solution, for example? How about Proust?
Some of my favourite authors include W.G. Sebald, Roberto Bolaño, Clarice Lispector, Thomas Pynchon, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Mark Z. Danielewski.
Thanks in advance!

If you’re open to fantasy books, I recommend [The Hands of the Emperor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/af2bba9c-8f41-4a3e-b87a-8532a44ccb67) by Victoria Goddard. It’s a (very long) beautifully written slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships.
