These kids are 9 and 11. They love comic books, which is great! I'm a big comic book fan myself. But I want to open up the world of novels to them as well, which has been a bit of a struggle.
When I was young, my first "novel" was a Berenstain Bears "Big Chapter Book". It had illustrations which helped me a lot, but was still a novel. I'm looking for something similar.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been a big success, but I'm looking for the next step. Something just a little bit more challenging to slowly ease them into novels. It's important to me to both challenge them and set them up for success.
Comics they have loved include Lumberjanes, Dog Man, Bone, The Legend of Zelda manga, Nichijou and Molly Knox Ostertag. They also really enjoyed The Wild Robot and The Hobbit books on tape, but I'm looking for something to actually get them to read. They love adventure, D&D and silly humour.
