“This story is a tragedy because it didn’t have to end this way.” VS “This story is a tragedy because it was always going to end this way” What stories come to your mind?

Spoiler’s for Harry Potter and One hundred years of solitude

For me, it's Fred's death in Harry Potter. There was no reason for him to die. And by reason, I mean compared to Dumbledore, Snape, Sirius and Lupin – It hurts me to say this, but with them, I feel like they had at least fulfilled some purpose before dying (though I would have loved for them to live). With Fred, he had has whole life ahead of him.

For the second, it’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. The story was cyclical, and I realised that pretty much early on in the book.….I couldn’t root for any characters happiness or success, cause I know it would end in downfall. It was a pretty depressing ending, but I saw it coming.
