So, here I was about to buy into the HUMBLE BOOK BUNDLE: L.E. MODESITT COLLECTION when I noticed that out of the amount I was about to pay less than a dollar would go to the World Wildlife Foundation. The rest was almost evenly split between McMillian and HB… Now, sure the bundle is a great deal… But it really irked me that HB would give out so little of the money to the charity this bundle is supposed to be helping… I adjusted the donation so that the majority would go to the WWF, HB got it’s min cut (which was still about half what WWF would get) and sent a little something to the publisher… this is the kind of things that simply suck dry humanity’s charity well..

This strikes me as another example of “charity as marketing.”
Grocery stores and convenience stores now “offer the opportunity” to round up your purchase to benefit Veterans, or St. Jude’s, or whatever.
Who gets the tax write-off for those donations? Not you and me. Enough to make an American (more) cynical, if possible.
Hey, thanks so much for mentioning this! I’m working through Modesitt’s backlog of books now and bundle saved me a shit ton of money.
Humble Bundle changed a lot since Ziff Davis company bought them.
It also always seems to default to more than the min required for the whole bundle, too. When I opened the page, it defaulted to $25, but it only requires $18.
