What he/we loved about The Bears on Hemlock Mountain:
- A long-ish “chapter” book but with an illustration on every page
- Simple language. Every word in the story was comprehensible and on-target with his language development
- Simple story line, easy for him to understand the plot.
- Some fun, repetitive language and sound effects
He just sat on the sofa and listened to the book for 30 full minutes, then asked to read it again!
We’ve tried other “classics” like Charlotte’s Web, Mr Popper’s Penguins, Stuart Little, etc but these are a bit too complicated for him at the moment.
We’ve also had great success with Frog and Toad books.
I’m specifically looking for longer books to encourage sustained listening and a greater attention span. We have plenty of great picture books already.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My 3 yo granddaughter found my youngest son’s copy of the first Captain Underpants book and loved it. We finished it in 3 sittings. I didn’t think she would care for it, but she loved it! Now she revisits her favourite scenes and retells the story to herself.
*The Cats of Tanglewood Forest* by Charles de Lint might work.
