My son's birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him some new books. Some series he has enjoyed in the past are:

    • Hunger Games
    • Ranger's Apprentice
    • Magnus Chase and (less so) Percy Jackson
    • His Dark Materials
    • Wings of Fire and Warrior Cats (when he was younger)

He's familiar with Lord of the Rings and Dune from watching the movies. Oh, and he has a copy of Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy but seems to have lost interest about halfway through.

    Thanks so much!

I’ll tell you what blew my hair back at 14: Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Wiess and Hickman. It’s the first of a trilogy set in the Dragonlance universe (Dungeons & Dragons).

I loved Abarat by Clive barker at that age, it’s a dark fantasy for young adults. The world building is fantastic.

Edit: and if you think he’s ready for something more adult then get him The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. The first book is called The Blade Itself.

I adore this series, it’s brutal, darkly hilarious and well written.

Red rising likely. It’s got a hunger games vibe. I hated it but it has rabid fans

    4. Try books by Brandon Mull! He has some really great middle grade epic fantasy. I find him an *extremely* well-written author even as someone in my thirties. I can vouch for Beyonders and Five Kingdoms being really great.

Try the first book of the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, The Final Empire. I read it at that age and absolutely loved it.

    6. The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Start with Sabriel.

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper, start with The Dark is Rising (not Over Sea Under Stone).

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (and the movie, too).

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. It’s a winter holiday book, so maybe save that one for a winter holiday. Also Guards! Guards! or Small Gods.

Try Sabriel by Garth Nix! Such an awesome magic system. Complex enough with themes and vocabulary to push a reader at his age but not lose interest. I recently read it but wish I read it younger! It’s def age appropriate so no worries there.
