Hello! So my stepson loves to read (so he claims) but he pretty much only reads graphic novels. As a result, he refuses to read anything he determines has “too many words.” He’s 10 (almost 11) and very, very smart.
I have a number of middle-reader books I’ve tried to lend him, and he either reads a single chapter and then says he hates it or he lies to me and says he read it but then can’t tell me anything about it. Our relationship is fine, he just doesn’t like my suggestions.
He loves the Amulet graphic novel series, and says he likes dragons and fantasy things. The only book I’ve suggested to him that he actually seems to like and wants to keep reading is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I’ve tried Pillage by Obert Skye, Harry Potter, The Giver, and have suggested the Leven Thumps series, but he says they don’t sound interesting to him.
He did a self assessment at school and said that he really wants to read more, and read things other than graphic novels. Any help is appreciated!
TL;DR My stepson says he likes fantasy and seems to be liking The Graveyard Book. Anything suggestions along that vein would be great!
