    Hi all!

With Christmas coming up, I’ve been thinking about what to get my 13 year old cousin. She doesn’t really like to read but it’s really so important in life! I’m hoping to find a good series of books to get her into it. I think fiction will be preferable. I was thinking the Twilight series would be really good! Any other suggestions?

    1. Please don’t give her Twilight. I don’t give a shit about adults enjoying it as like popcorn reading or whatever, but it’s a fucked up story to inflict on its intended audience of teenage girls.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin is gorgeous prose, LeGuin was a legend, and these books are that rare treasure that get better and better when you revisit them later.

Catfishing on Catnet by Naomi Kritzer is a fun near-future story, I really enjoyed it & it’s a really good blend of warm/wholesome and tense/fast-paced.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking and/or The Raven and the Reindeer by Ursula Vernon – very different tones, but both fantastic. Guide is lighter and funnier, Raven is sort of dark fairy tale but age appropriate.

    2. I’m really worried that no matter what you do, she will not like it, because she does not like to read. Some people just do not like to read.

But for you to figure out something that she would like, you’re going to have to be right on target with what things she likes. What is she into? What does she like to do? Is there anyone that she admires? Is there any movie that she keeps watching over and over and over?
