Allow me to explain. What I am looking for is probably a post apocalyptic world or a world that has gone through some sort of a terrifying event. At each turn things become more bizarre or strange leading to more questions. The origin of this world changing agent is either partially or fully explained. I will be using three books as an example so be wary of extremely minor spoilers for these books; Cell by Stephen King, Conquerer Worms by Brian Keene, All the fiends of hell by Adam Nevill.
In conquerer worms characters are dealing with a new type of danger at every turn and there are lots of terrifying things ready to kill them. In Cell, you get your typical zombie apocalypse at first but then things get more bizarre and complicated. What does NOT fit my request is any post apocalyptic book where characters are simply trying to survive. All the fiends of hell is one example. The characters are merely surviving a new kind of horror (pun intended) they have never seen before. There isn't much mystery there except maybe how the creatures behave it's never explored further or how they came to be. there has to be some kind of a mystery element to the story while characters are trying to deal or survive the ordeal.
