So this is an informal review / just my thoughts on this book. I finished it yesterday and I have mixed feelings.
It was beautifully written and I can understand why many regard it as a classic, I love dystopian novels, 1984 is one of my favourite books so I was incredibly excited to read MP.
I found it difficult to get into, immediately o felt the pacing was slow and this was probably a stylistic choice as there is a dreamy, timeless and melancholic (almost depressive) feel to the book and the setting however, despite this I just couldn’t fully get into it…it was as if I was reading a book assignment.
I couldn’t connect to the protagonist either, which was also probably deliberate as she feels disconnected with herself and her memories. It’s much harder to connect with her as she doesn’t have a name, no one except R does.
I found the relationship between the protagonist and R, confusing and awkward. His marriage was ignored, the two never discuss their affair or the consequences of it. I did feel the chemistry between them but just couldn’t fully support it as unfortunately R was married, it didn’t serve anything to the plot, apart from a couple of mentions. I don’t understand the choice of having him be a married man but then also building up chemistry and allowing him to have an affair with the protagonist.
I didn’t hate this book, I’m glad I read it but it was underwhelming and I don’t think I would read it again.
I would give it 3.8/5 stars.
