For a while now I've heard vague tellings of how the original tales were adapted to be more palatable as the years went on and different adaptations were made, and I'm sure this is true to an extent and that the Disney Rapunzel isnt the same as the Grimm brother's one.

With that said, I can't seem to find a lot of information on how exactly darker the stories were, and there's also a lot of different "original" versions floating around the internet (containing themes like assault) and that makes me kind of skeptical. I also read about how the writers themselves made different versions to appease the growingly religiously conservative crowd so that makes my search even more overwhelming. I initially thought the whole "the originals are much darker than the modern versions" thing was about the Grimms brothers but I saw a post saying Hans Christian Andersen was the one they were talking about and that the brother's stories weren't actually that grim (ahah). Basically I'm just overwhelmed with information that I don't even understand if it's like historically accurate or not and was looking for anyone who could help me out.

I know the obvious answer to my doubts is to just read the tales as they're easily available online, but my search derives from the fact that I wanted to buy a physical book and read it for the first time physically! In that note, if anyone knows of any good editions of Tales collection, let me know! Preferably first edition translations if what I read about later editions being more conservative is true
