No doubt readers of this subreddit have noticed that the vast number of publishing names are imprints of larger companies. I have done some amateur investigation on this historical process, but there is only so much one can deduce from Wikipedia articles and newspaper reports.
I am searching for a reference, academic, legalese, or other, that can explain or narrate the series of events, if not the mechanism, of why the publishing industry has transformed into an oligopoly (future monopoly?).
Any help?
