There are literally thousands of crime novels where events transpire from the perspective of the detective, sleuth, or investigator solving the crime.

It’s rare (in my experience) for the plot to develop from the opposite perspective – where the perpetrator is the protagonist of the novel. I can think of a couple, maybe Perfume, and Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley books. I loved the stories of Tom Ripley. Despite the fact that he was a morally ambiguous character doing bad things, you found yourself hoping he would “get away with it”, and it added so much narrative tension to the story.

Can you recommend any novels where the malefactors or miscreants are the focus? Extra points if they’re written in such a way that you identify with them or hope that they triumph!
