So The Bell Jar is one of my favorite books and I'd love to read more books from the perspective of mentally ill main characters/narrators. One thing about The Bell Jar (and, say, Notes from Underground) is that it is very much a product of its time, which means that it is just as much a commentary on living with mental illness as it is a commentary on living with mental illness in that time period. I want books that explore these ideas in the current day(ish). Two books that I feel hit this mark to varying degrees:
- My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
- Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo
I'd also especially appreciate suggestions where the main character is male.
